Track
Record a session with minimal effort, then use the track as a shared reference for a calm debrief.
What tracking gives you
What gets recorded
- GPS track and timestamps
- Session start and end
- Heel (useful for comparison and coaching discussion)
- A consistent data file that can be opened in the debrief tool
What it does not try to do
- It does not require mobile data while sailing
- It does not try to replace good coaching observation
- It does not aim for perfect accuracy in every condition
How to use it on the water
- Charge and protect the phone
Fully charge before sailing and use a waterproof case.
- Mount it safely
Secure it so it cannot come loose and so it won’t snag sheets.
- Start recording
Start the session before launching (or as soon as practical).
- Sail the session
Coach and sail as normal. Keep the session focused on one or two objectives.
- Stop recording
Stop the session once you’re finished and back in.
Training mode (optional)
Training mode can show live bearing while you sail. It can also display bearing and heel together as a simple on the water feedback tool.
- Useful for specific drills (e.g. holding a steady course or testing changes)
- Best used alongside coaching, not instead of it
- Treat readings as guidance — conditions and phone placement matter
Push-to-talk coaching (optional)
Dinghy Coach can be used with push-to-talk voice coaching in some setups. Treat it as a simple way to give short instructions, not continuous commentary.
- Keep messages short and specific
- Avoid talking during manoeuvres unless needed
- Agree a few standard phrases before the session
Tracking is only step one — the learning comes from the debrief.
Common questions
-
Do sailors need mobile data on the water?
No. Sessions can be recorded offline. Uploading can happen later when a connection is available.
-
How accurate is the track?
It’s designed to be robust and useful rather than perfect. Phone placement and conditions affect results.
-
What about battery life?
Charge before the session. For long days, use a power bank between sails.
-
How do we mount the phone safely?
Use a waterproof case and a secure attachment. Avoid anything that can snag sheets or trap a sailor.
